Lady Gertrude Fotheringale spent nearly a week ruminating on the finer points of her scheme to fleece the Earl of Ravenstone. It had been her intention to waylay the Earl while he was still residing in Devonshire. However, unfortunately for her, Lord Ravenstone returned to London the day after his enlightening altercation with the Shackleford chit.
If she wasnât to end up on the streets again, Gertrude Fotheringale would be forced to quit her cosy cottage, at least temporarily, for the less tranquil delights of the Village.
She had no intention of becoming Dolly Smith again so needed to stay as far away as possible from her old haunts. There were too many ruffians and thieves with long memories just waiting for her to show her face again and run bleating to the Upright Man. The fact was, simply returning to London was beyond dangerous for someone in her situation, though in truth she had no choice if she wished to strike while the iron was hot. And in any event Gertrude Fotheringale was persuaded that her appearance had altered sufficiently to keep her out of the clutches of the Upright Man providing she was careful. But that would take more blunt than she currently had.
What she did have was a piece of jewellery sheâd managed to filch from a corpse when she was still Dolly Smith and which sheâd been saving for just such an occasion as this. She couldnât risk trying to sell it in London. The unfortunate victim had been from an old established family and even after seven years, the piece might well be recognised. Instead she intended to try her luck in a more provincial setting.
The seaside town of Torquay was her surest means of securing the extra rhino. Barely an hour away by carriage, there were always a large number of Royal Navy ships back from the war against Boney anchored in the bay with plenty of officers who had wives with expensive tastes and not too many scruples. Of course, sheâd be forced to sell the piece at much less than its real value so there wouldnât be enough to keep her until she finally joined her idiot of a husband downstairs, but with any luck it would bring her enough coin to see her scheme throughâ¦
